I just read an article about a gentlemen who developed a series of kidney stones. The reason?
Too much iced tea.
“The pain was so bad that once it felt like I was delivering a child made out of razor blades,” – he said.
Now, this website is about kidney stones in women but there is a very specific reason I chose to let you now about this story.
Iced tea is seen as a ‘healthy’ option when it comes to beverages. You may be smarter than to believe that but I can tell you thousands of people believe that. Mind you, if made right – it can be a healthy option. But keep reading.
Here is the thing. Iced tea contains high concentrations of oxalate, one of the key chemicals that lead to the formation of kidney stones. There are also other foods that follow a similar patten such as spinach, chocolate, rhubarb and nuts.
I usually recommend people limit these in their diet when either preventing or treating kidney stones in women.
Anyway, back to the story. This guy was drinking as much as 6 glasses of iced tea per day. He ended up having surgery. (http://www.loyolamedicine.org/)
Moral of the story? Why are kidney stones in women increasing and becoming a huge problem? – don’t over do it. Stay smart.
Furthermore, here is what Dr. John Milner, instructor, department of urology, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, Ill had to say. “For people who have a tendency to form kidney stones, it’s definitely one of the worst things you can drink.”
He continues on about increasing lemons in your diet – “Lemons are very high in citrates, which inhibit the growth of kidney stones,” Milner said.
That’s it for this kidney stones in women post, just wanted to give you some ‘awareness’ about this issue.
Take care,
Caroline
